RIVER KWAI BRIDGE

ABOUT THE RIVER KWAI BRIDGE

The famous River Kwai Bridge was constructed during WW II. Japan constructed the meter-gauge railway line from Ban Pong, Thailand to Thanbyuzayat, Burma. The line passing through the scenic Three Pagodas Pass runs for 250 miles.

This reconstructed iron-rail bridge has become the immortal symbol of the Death Railway’s 414-km stretch. Linking the two sides of the Kwai Yai River, the bridge is perhaps the most photographed landmark in Kanchanaburi and has attracted travellers from all corners of the world.

The one standing today is actually a reconstruction of the original bridge built by the Allied POWs under the Japanese army, which was bombed and destroyed in 1945 after being in use for 20 months. Set against a scenic backdrop of the river, the bridge is still used today.

You can walk on it and cross over to the other side of the river, but be careful of trains (twice a day) and motorcycles sharing the narrow path. It’s a good idea to drop by the JEATH War Museum before you actually head to the bridge, to learn about its history and stories behind the construction of the Death Railway.

our review

We had watched various films, documentaries and television programmes involving the 'Bridge over the River Kwai' and during our visit to Thailand we thought we simply have to visit it!

We wasn't disappointed, the views here were amazing and very picturesque. Standing on the bridge watching the train ride the death railway past us and turning around to see the long boats gently floating down the River Kwai really was a tranquil and surreal experience. With so much history surrounding the bridge it obviously draws a lot of tourist interest so can get busy during certain periods of the day, but it was never too crowded that you couldn't enjoy it. You can also board the 'Death Railway' at the stop near the bridge which is also a great experience with lots of amazing views.

There are a lot of photo opportunities here and also lots of shops and a little market place nearby.
