what is a Buddha?

Buddhism is the world's fourth-largest religion with over 520 million followers, or over 7% of the global population, known as Buddhists. Buddhism encompasses a variety of traditions, beliefs and spiritual practices largely based on original teachings attributed to the Buddha and resulting interpreted philosophies.

A Buddha is an Indian religious leader: founder of Buddhism. A Buddha can be any of a series of teachers in Buddhism, of whom Gautama was the last, who bring enlightenment and wisdom.

WHERE CAN I FIND big buddha?

The White Buddha on the hill is an imposing presence from the Pai town centre. It's a walkable distance, about 2 kilometres with a final 353 steps to the top. It can also be reached by motorized transport on a sealed road. The top area where the Buddha sits is a wide open tiled space to rest and watch the view. It is best to be there for the sunset as the Buddha faces the west.

OUR REVIEW

When visiting Pai, you can't help but notice the huge White Buddha that's situated in the mountains. It looks almost magical and you can see it from most locations in Pai.

We decided to visit and hired a scooter to get us to the top (to avoid to 2km walk).

The temple itself or the Buddha is huge in size however it isn't that spectacular but when you combine the proximity of the White Buddha to main street, the challenging climb and the spectacular view and chill-out space on top, it's not one to be missed when you're in Pai.

TOP TIPS

There are 353 steps to the top of the Pai Buddha and unless you're physically fit, this can take some time. It's good to bear this in mind during the hotter periods in Thailand and be sure to take some water with you.

Also, as this is a temple, your shoes need to be removed at the top of the staircase before you enter the Buddha surface, knees and shoulders should also be covered.
