PAI CANYON
what is a canyon?
A canyon or gorge is a deep cleft between escarpments or cliffs resulting from weathering and the erosive activity of a river over geologic timescales. Rivers have a natural tendency to cut through underlying surfaces, eventually wearing away rock layers as sediments are removed downstream.
WHERE CAN I FIND PAI CANYON?
Pai Canyon is located about 7km from Pai District, you can get there by travelling along Highway No. 1095, Pai-Mae Malai, by car or scooter. However if you're travelling from Chiang Mai it is around a 88km journey with a very windy round of around 77 turns in total so it is a good idea to bear this in mind if you suffer from car sickness.
OUR REVIEW
The views from the top of the Pai Canyon are out of this world, simply amazing, especially if you visit just before sunset.
I'm (Katy) afraid of heights however you don't have to go too close to the edge if you don't want to (we did see some people attempt to go to the ridge area and because they were scared of heights, they were too scared to walk back, luckily they had friends with them who could help them).
There are a lot of steps to climb before you reach the canyon so suitable footwear is advisable however not a necessity (as many people can walk this in their flip-flops).
It was cute to walk around and see the rock formations people had left around the canyon, there are plenty of spots where you can plot up for a picnic or enjoy the view for long periods of time.
Overall, well worth a visit if you're in Pai.
TOP TIPS
There are a lot of steps to climb before you reach the canyon so suitable footwear is advisable however not a necessity (as many people can walk this in their flip-flops). Also if you have a fear of heights then do not go too close to the edge or attempt the 'walk of death' section as these can be quite scary and you wouldn't want to get stuck on the wrong side of the canyon.
